Legacies

The income from passenger fares, catering and shop sales covers the day-to-day operational costs for Waverley and some of the annual maintenance and renewal costs. However, the operational revenue does not generate enough income to carry out all of our annual winter maintenance or fund renewal projects.

Why remember Waverley in your Will?

Throughout Waverley’s preservation career there has been a heroic struggle to keep her in service. Waverley has been fortunate in benefiting from legacy income in recent years and this has allowed us to continue to maintain and operate the ship.

The work to maintain Waverley in operation is never finished, however you can help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the unique experience of sailing on a seagoing paddle steamer by leaving a gift in your Will to Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., the registered charity which owns the ship.

Legacy income has helped finance major work to the ship including the replacement of the rudder stock in 2018, and in meeting annual winter refit costs.

How do I leave a legacy?

It is helpful to consult a solicitor when first preparing a Will. There are two types of legacy:

  • Pecuniary – a specific sum
  • Residuary – the whole or part of an estate after specific gifts have been made.

Alternatively, you can also leave a specific gift, an item of value which could be sold for the benefit of Waverley’s charity or future benefit to Waverley such as property or shares.

If you have already made a Will, it is recommended that you review it at least every five years and after a major change in your life to make sure that it always reflects your wishes.

Can I specify what my legacy is used for?

Yes, if you specify a particular purpose for your legacy then the Board will do its upmost to fulfil that intent. However, unrestricted legacies are appreciated because they enable us to target funds where they are most appropriate at any given time.
